Overview

The main objective of this AP® United States History Period 1 guide is to explain the context for European encounters in the Americas from 1491 to 1607. This guide describes how and why various native populations in the period before European contact interacted with the natural environment in North America. As there were around 50 to 60 million Indigenous people living in the Americas before the arrival of Columbus, we’ll choose just one illustrative example for each regional group. Illustrative examples are specific historical occurrences that help explain or prove a major theme.
